Avi Gabbay's term as leader of the Labor Party will end on July 2, two years after he was elected, after announcing on Tuesday that he would not run for the Labor Party leadership race. .
Gabbay had resisted calls for resignation since he was leading the Labor Party from 24 to 6 seats during the April 9 election. But he wrote Tuesday in a long post on Facebook that he would not try to stay longer running in the primary.
"I will not be running for the party next month," Gabbay wrote. "The direction was already clear on the night of the last election, but the big decisions should not be made in a storm, so I waited until the issue was relevant to decide and make an announcement."
Gabbay should still run for the Knesset, as Wednesday's Labor Convention decides to keep the current list of Knesset candidates for the September 17 elections or to hold a new primary among the 60,000 party members.
Former businessman and party minister Kulanu won with great fanfare the leadership race of the Labor Party on July 4, 2017, beating MP Amir Peretz in a run in the second round, after the two candidates had won more votes than six other candidates.
Gabbay led a campaign in which he had promised not to enter the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but after the April 9 elections, he negotiated an agreement with Netanyahu.
The Labor Party has still not decided how to elect Gabbay's successor. The party postponed its congress, which was scheduled for Wednesday after the Tel Aviv District Court ruled that the 60,000 registered party members – not the 3,500 activists eligible to vote in Congress – should decide which body to choose for the next one. leader of the Labor Party.
