^Sam Mellinger: Trying to explain the post-Chiefs decline of Marcus Peters<
^FBN-MELLINGER-COLUMN-SPORTSPLUS:KC— “what if your boy just isn’t that good?” He was talking about Marcus Peters. He and I have talked a lot about Marcus Peters, and the conversation could generally be summed up by us agreeing Peters is a terrific player but disagreeing on whether he was ultimately worth the trouble. The text was the first time in the conversation — a year old by now, in one form or another — that either of us considered the possibility that Peters is not one of the NFL’s best 20 or so cornerbacks. 1550 by Sam Mellinger. MOVED PHOTO ^Poor field conditions in Mexico City forces NFL to move Monday’s Chiefs-Rams game to the Coliseum< FBN-CHIEFS-RAMS-MEXICO-1ST-LEDE:LA — The marquee “Monday Night Football” game between the Rams and Kansas City Chiefs will be played in Los Angeles — not in Mexico City, as originally planned. Poor field conditions at Estadio Azteca prompted the NFL on Tuesday to pull the plug on the Mexico City game, reverting to the Coliseum because it’s technically a home game for the Rams. A concert nine days before the planned kickoff left the playing surface at the Mexico City stadium in serious disrepair. 450 by Sam Farmer and Gary Klein in Los Angeles. MOVED PHOTO ^Jimmy Butler wants to help Sixers compete for a title: ‘All I’ve ever wanted to do is win’< BKN-76ERS-BUTLER:PHI — Sitting on a stage in a black zip-up hoodie and sweatpants at the 76ers practice facility in Camden, N.J., Jimmy Butler was the main event of an introductory press conference Tuesday. The past few days have moved fast for Butler since the Sixers acquired him and Justin Patton on Saturday in a trade that sent Dario Saric, Robert Covington, Jerryd Bayless, and a second-round pick to Minnesota. That’s why he was the only one on stage not wearing a suit. 850 by Sarah Todd in Philadelphia. MOVED PHOTO ^BASEBALL< ^Jose Abreu confident he will re-sign with White Sox: ‘I’m going to be part of this organization for a very long time’< ^BBA-WHITESOX-ABREU:TB— The Sox have repeatedly said Abreu is an integral part of the rebuild as a mentor to young players such as Yoan Moncada and Luis Robert. But unless he re-signs before the 2019 season begins, Abreu’s name is bound to come up in trade rumors before the July deadline. 750 by Paul Sullivan. MOVED PHOTO ^MLB launches investigation into executive’s allegations of racism against Mariners< ^BBA-MARINERS-MLB-INVESTIGATION:TC— Lorena Martin, the Mariners’ director of high performance who was fired on Oct. 10, specifically named general manager Jerry Dipoto, manager Scott Servais and director of player development Andy McKay in a string of posts on Instagram and Twitter and later to The News Tribune. 450 by TJ Cotterill. MOVED PHOTO ^Brian Snitker wins NL manager of the year< ^BBN-BRAVES-SNITKER-MOY:AT— Snitker oversaw one of MLB’s most pleasant surprises, his Braves winning 90 games and claiming the National League East title. Seventeen of the 30 first-place votes went to Snitker. Milwaukee’s Craig Counsell finished second with 11 votes. Colorado’s Bud Black was third. “The respect I have for all major league managers is unbelievable,” Snitker said. 500 by Gabriel Burns. MOVED ^A’s manager Bob Melvin wins Manager of the Year for third time< BBA-ATHLETICS-MELVIN-MOY:CC — Few people in baseball are having a better offseason than Bob Melvin. Two weeks after getting a contract extension through 2021, the A’s manager was named American League Manager of the Year. Melvin received 18 of the 30 first-place votes for the award given out by Baseball Writers’ Association of America, finishing ahead of Boston’s Alex Cora (7) and Kevin Cash (5) of the Tampa Bay Rays. It’s Melvin’s third time winning the award. He won it with the A’s in 2012 and Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007. Melvin and Maddon trail former A’s manager Tony La Russa and Bobby Cox, who both won the award a record four times. 450 by Martin Gallegos in Oakland, Calif. MOVED ^NFL< ^Mark Bradley: Why the 4-5 Falcons are only half a team< ^FBN-BRADLEY-COLUMN:AT— 850 by Mark Bradley. MOVED ^Matt Calkins: How much are the Seahawks missing Kam, Earl and other defensive departures? A lot< FBN-CALKINS-COLUMN:SE — One thing NFL defenses do is sucker you into making a bad read. On the field, this can mean luring a quarterback into throwing a pick-six. Off the field, it can mean tricking media into thinking you’re better than you are. Given what quality offenses have been able to do against the Seahawks this year, I can’t help but think the above sentence applies. Their D has been football’s version of a “four-A” baseball player — master of the rest, but mastered by the best. 750 by Matt Calkins in Los Angeles. MOVED ^Tim Cowlishaw: Division or bust? Cowboys have a surprising road map to a wild-card spot< ^FBN-COWLISHAW-COLUMN:DA—
The ESPN Power Index gives the Cowboys a 30 percent chance of reaching the playoffs. I think it might be even higher. Let’s go all the way to 32. 800 by Tim Cowlishaw. MOVED ^Mike Preston: Marvin Lewis will focus on fixing Bengals, and not as much on who will be Ravens QB< FBN-PRESTON-COLUMN:BZ — Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is trying to be coy about which quarterback, veteran Joe Flacco (hip injury) or rookie Lamar Jackson, will be his starter Sunday, but Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis probably doesn’t care. He has he is own problems to be worried about. The Bengals have owned Flacco throughout the years and even if Jackson, a first-round pick out of Louisville, starts, it’s not like the Ravens will have a total overhaul of their offense. They would probably put in more short pbading plays off bootlegs, waggles and sprint outs and use run pbad option plays for Jackson 500 by Mike Preston in Baltimore. MOVED PHOTO ^Brad Biggs’ Week 11 NFL rankings< ^FBN-RANKINGS:TB— 950 by Brad Biggs. MOVED PHOTO ^Sam Mellinger: Chiefs can and should make things right with fans who planned to watch game in Mexico< ^FBN-MELLINGER-COLUMN:KC— The NFL done messed up. 750 by Sam Mellinger. MOVED PHOTO ^In high-scoring NFL, it’s time for NFC North to stand up for itself< ^FBN-NFCNORTH-SCORING:MS— But At a time when Super Bowl contenders and pretenders are being separated by loud, forceful, high-scoring statement games, the NFC North is the shy kid in the corner looking down at his shoes. Thirteen teams carry a winning record into Week 11 of the NFL season. 700 by Mark Craig. MOVED ^Manish Mehta: Jets need to sign Le’Veon Bell, even if they have to overpay< ^FBN-MEHTA-COLUMN:NY— This is the ultimate no-brainer for a rebuilding franchise plodding along at a snail’s pace. There are no more excuses or justifications for general manager Mike Maccagnan, who talks about the future on an endless loop. Well, it’s time to land this futuristic running back who can accelerate the rebuilding process one video-game-like juke at a time. 1200 by Manish Mehta. MOVED ^NBA< ^Marcus Hayes: New Sixer Jimmy Butler is an alpha dog, and that changes everything< ^BKN-HAYES-COLUMN:PHI— There’s a new sheriff in town, and you like it. He’s brash and he’s gruff and he says what’s on his mind. He likes country music and cowboy boots and he hates — hates — badfooting around. He’ll fit right in, with the town and with the team. Jimmy Butler rides into Philadelphia the most Philly athlete the town has seen since Chase Utley rode out. He might hurt Joel Embiid’s feelings, and he might bruise Ben Simmons’ ego, but Butler won’t care. 850 by Marcus Hayes. MOVED PHOTO ^Caris LeVert will not need surgery and could return this season, Nets team doctor says< ^BKN-NETS-LEVERT:ND— However, all may not be lost for LeVert this season after all. The Nets issued an update Tuesday afternoon that indicated LeVert suffered no break or fracture when he injured his lower right leg in a fall at Target Center, and he is expected to return at full strength later this season. 800 by Greg Logan. MOVED ^Bob Ford: Will Jimmy Butler be happy this time? The Sixers are betting everything on it.< ^BKN-FORD-COLUMN:PHI— This isn’t lightly done, because it means the team, through trade or free agency, must take on either an immensely limiting salary obligation or a basketball personality equally capable of uniting the team or tearing it apart. In trading for Jimmy Butler, the 76ers have acquired all of those potential positives and negatives. 950 by Bob Ford. MOVED PHOTO ^Sixers GM Elton Brand on Markelle Fultz: ‘I’ve never seen him shoot a free throw like that’< ^BKN-76ERS-FULTZ:PHI— Markelle Fultz’s jarringly awful free throw attempt from Monday night’s game was a dark cloud waiting to strike. Jimmy Butler was in town and it was his day. The stage set up in the practice facility was for Butler. Then, after a 25 minute press conference, Butler’s time was up. Then general manager Elton Brand held court with the Sixers beat reporters. The main topic: Markelle Fultz. 600 by Sarah Todd. MOVED PHOTO ^Warriors suspend Draymond Green for Kevin Durant confrontation< ^BKN-WARRIORS-GREEN:SJ— The Warriors announced Green will be suspended without pay for his role in escalating an ugly argument following Golden State’s 121-116 overtime loss to the Clippers. 150 by Jon Becker. MOVED ^David Whitley: Shattered: Dawkins made dunking history 39 years ago< BKN-WHITLEY-COLUMN:OS — Darryl Dawkins was a legend around Orlando long before Nov. 13, 1979. But what happened that night made him an international basketball icon. The man known as Chocolate Thunder dunked the ball so hard that it shattered a backboard. Sure, there were other major events that year. Three Mile Island almost melted down. The U.S.S.R. invaded Afghanistan. The Ayatollah Khomeini returned to power in Iran. Nothing was as spectacular as what happened at Kansas City Municipal Auditorium. The Philadelphia 76ers were in town to play the Kansas City Kings. 600 by David Whitley in Orlando, Fla. MOVED PHOTO ^Jimmy Butler not worried about on-court fit with Sixers’ ball-dominant young stars< BKN-76ERS-BUTLER-FIT:PHI — When word leaked Saturday that Jimmy Butler would be joining the 76ers, the NBA realm came to a standstill. Not only did his trade to the Sixers come as a surprise, the move raises a major question. How will the ball-dominant swingman fit in with new teammates Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons? After four days of speculations, we’ll get a glimpse of the new-look Sixers (9-6) on Wednesday night. That’s when Butler will make his debut against the Orlando Magic at Amway Center. 600 by Keith Pompey in Miami. MOVED PHOTO ^Cavs romp over Hornets for second win of season< BKN-HORNETS-CAVS:AK — After hitting rock bottom with a 32-point loss at Charlotte on Nov. 3, it wouldn’t have taken much for the Cavaliers to show improvement in Tuesday’s rematch at Quicken Loans Arena. But turning the tables for a 113-89 victory — a stunning 56-point differential — seemed like a statement, especially for a Cavs team that picked up just its second victory in 13 games this season. After losing their past three by a total of 12 points since the Charlotte debacle, the Cavs believed they were close to putting it together. They proved that as Jordan Clarkson scored seven of his season-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, Tristan Thompson had his fourth consecutive double-double and tied his career-high with 21 rebounds and six players scored in double figures. 650 by Marla Ridenour in Cleveland. MOVED Tuesday’s games TNS expects coverage from the following games: Atlanta at Golden State, 10:30 p.m. ^NHL< ^Ousted Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville a strong fit for Seattle’s incoming NHL team< ^HKN-BAKER-COLUMN:SE— The Chicago Blackhawks fired head coach Joel Quenneville, whose 890 career victories are second on the NHL career coaching list. One of hockey’s worst-kept secrets for years has been the ongoing differences between Quenneville, 60, and Chicago general manager Stan Bowman, son of Blackhawks octogenarian special adviser Scotty Bowman, who happens to sit No. 1 in NHL career coaching victories. 1000 by Geoff Baker. MOVED ^Tom Kuhnhackl scores twice in Islanders’ 5-2 win over Canucks< ^HKN-CANUCKS-ISLANDERS:ND— But points in the standings are more important than style points and the Islanders snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Canucks on Tuesday night at Barclays Center to open a three-game homestand. Jordan Eberle added a goal and an badist, Brock Nelson and Mathew Barzal had two badists and Thomas Greiss made 22 saves for the Islanders (9-6-2), who played one forward short in the third period after left wing Andrew Ladd appeared to injure his right leg in a collision with defenseman Erik Gudbranson late in the second period. 500 by Andrew Gross. MOVED ^Devils honor Martin Brodeur before getting much-needed win over Penguins< ^HKN-PENGUINS-DEVILS:HK—< The Devils have been completely devoid of any puck luck in recent games, but on a night they celebrated a legend, they got a few good bounces and a few more good shots, persevering for a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night at Prudential Center. In their first game home following a disastrous seven-game road trip, the Devils overcame a disallowed goal and a goal that maybe should have been disallowed for the Penguins to snap their three-game losing streak. 600 by Abbey Mastracco in Newark, N.J. MOVED ^Flyers lose to Panthers, end six-game point streak< HKN-PANTHERS-FLYERS:PHI — The Flyers’ points streak is over. Listless for two periods, they awoke in the final 20 minutes Tuesday but it wasn’t enough as they dropped a 2-1 decision to Florida at the Wells Fargo, ending their six-game points streak (5-0-1). The Panthers, who survived a wild scramble in front of their net in the waning seconds, extended their winning streak to five. Jake Voracek scored from deep inside the right circle, one-timing a cross-ice pbad from Oskar Lindblom and getting the Flyers within 2-1 with 16:05 left in regulation. 550 by Sam Carchidi in Philadelphia. MOVED ^Red Wings rout Coyotes for 7th win in 8 games< HKN-COYOTES-REDWINGS:DE — After going winless through their first seven games of the season, the Detroit Red Wings have won seven of their last eight games. Their latest victory came Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena, where a first-period cushion gave way to a 6-1 rout of the Arizona Coyotes. The Wings scored early and often to improve to 8-8-2 after starting 1-7-2. It was their fourth straight victory, and part of an eight-game stretch that has seen them score 31 goals after collecting just 21 goals through the first 10 games. 500 by Helene St. James in Detroit. MOVED ^Wild get a rude welcome at home in 5-2 loss to Capitals< ^HKN-CAPITALS-WILD:MS—< A 10-point lift up the standings from five victories wasn't the only souvenir the Wild returned home with after a seven-game stint on the road. The team also arrived back at Xcel Energy Center with the moxie that guided its success, since the Wild either dominated their way to wins or rallied with an impressive resiliency. But that swagger didn’t show up on time, as the Wild tripped into a deep hole that they couldn’t climb out of en route to a 5-2 setback to the defending Stanley-Cup champion Capitals on Tuesday 550 by Sarah McLellan in St. Paul, Minn. MOVED Tuesday’s games TNS expects coverage from the following games: Tampa Bay at Buffalo, 7:30 p.m. Toronto at Los Angeles, 10:30 p.m. Nashville at San Jose, 10:30 p.m. ^COLLEGE FOOTBALL< ^To rebuild USC football program, the Trojans must break from Pete Carroll’s ties< ^FBC-HERNANDEZ-COLUMN:LA— Such as now. And it so happened that Carroll’s return to the Coliseum on Sunday coincided with the latest crash to rock bottom for the Trojans, who endured a humiliating 15-14 defeat to California on the same grounds the previous night. 900 by Dylan Hernandez. MOVED PHOTO ^Report of Clemson transfer QB Kelly Bryant visiting Miami doesn’t sit well with some Hurricanes< FBC-MIAMI-BRYANT:FL — During his tenure at Miami, Hurricanes coach Mark Richt hasn’t shied away from recruiting — and signing — graduate transfers he believes can help his team win immediately. But right now, some of Miami’s most recent recruiting overtures to one high-profile graduate transfer don’t seem to be sitting well with at least some of the current players on the Hurricanes’ roster. Miami running back Lorenzo Lingard on Monday night took to Twitter to share his thoughts on a Rivals.com report that former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant, a graduate transfer, is set to make an official visit to UM later this month. 900 by Christy Cabrera Chirinos in Coral Gables, Fla. MOVED PHOTO ^Ohio State’s Urban Meyer on racial slur allegation: ‘preposterous’< ^FBC-OSU-MEYER:TB— The piece, appearing under the headline, “The Search for the Truth About Trevon Grimes’ Transfer from Ohio State to Florida,” also accused head coach Urban Meyer of covering up the incident. 350 by Teddy Greenstein. MOVED PHOTO ^UCF moves up to No. 11 in latest CFP rankings< ^FBC-CFP-RANKINGS:OS— The Knights (9-0) managed to gain some ground in their quest for a spot in one of the two semifinals with a win over Navy Saturday, extending the nation’s longest win streak to 22 games. This is the first time a team from the Group of 5 conferences has been ranked higher than No. 12. The committee continues to be impressed with UCF’s offensive prowess. 500 by Matt Murschel. MOVED PHOTO ^FANTASY FOOTBALL< ^Week 11 fantasy football waiver wire: Marcus Mariota and Anthony Miller have value< ^FBN-FANTASY-WAIVERWIRE:TB— 700 by Phil Thompson. MOVED PHOTO ^Fantasy football Week 11: Add and drop< ^FBN-FANTASY-ADD-DROP:SD— Here’s my best bets off the waiver wire for Week 11. 650 by Eddie Brown.
