Monday, Stephen Hillenburg, creator of the widely appreciated cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants, deceased. He had ALS and was only 57 years old.

Before delighting millions of children with his work, Hillenburg made his debut in experimental animation. And it turned out that he rubbed shoulders with another resident of Los Angeles who spent the 90's pbading the experimental fringe to the general public, albeit in a very different medium.

Last night, in a message on Facebook, Beck paid tribute to Hillenburg. He wrote that Hillenburg and he used to be neighbors. And he also wrote that Hillenburg had made the illustration of Beck's single in 1993, titled "MTV makes me want to smoke crack".

I am very sad to learn of the death of Stephen Hillenberg, who was my neighbor many years ago and who has kindly made the models for the first music I have published. The photo of the Record was taken behind his apartment. Better known as the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, I always remembered him as a really nice guy. I had the chance to meet him by chance at the airport a few months ago. I send my condolences to his family and to all the friends who miss him today and who think of the good old days.
