We launched the Bloom application ten years ago, a few months after the existence of the iPhone App Store. We felt we were on something special, but were nevertheless surprised by the reaction.
We have designed this app to explore unexplored territories in music and art: Bloom is a "generative" music tool for iOS that plays a serious drone. Touching the screen produces different tones, which play in a loop. If the screen is not touched, the software will create its own music. But interact with her and that's so much more. Bloom is an endless music machine, a music box for the 21st century. You can play it and you can watch it play by itself.
We started hearing stories of people using it to sleep or relax on long flights, then more unexpected uses: parents used it to calm young children and, in some cases, to calm down autistic children.
We noticed a trend in the way people use Bloom. When they get it for the first time, they tend to frantically tap, cluttering the screen with expanding circles. They soon realize that everything they do is back to them, but has changed slightly. In the next few minutes, something wonderful happens: they slow down. Their focus changes, they play less and listen more. They enter the world of Bloom.
We always thought that Bloom was a music system that could be developed further – it was like we had built a CD player and never released a single CD. For the release of Bloom: 10 Worlds, we created ten new worlds, starting with a reinvented version of the original application, and then moving on to a series of new shapes, colors, and sounds, while discreetly tinkering with the rules behind the scenes. .
It seems that we must calm down now more than ever. Let's hope that Bloom: 10 Worlds will help a few more people to reach this goal.
The Bloom app: 10 Worlds by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers is a reimagination of the original – not just a remastero version – 10 years after the first release. If the original Bloom was a single, then it would be an album. The wide range of sounds and images can be experienced via 10 new "worlds", each exploring a new direction for Bloom. The first world encountered by the user is an echo of the original application, with circles where the user types, while the latest universes introduce new combinations of sounds, shapes , colors and rules of behavior. The application is available from November 27 on generativemusic.com, starting at US $ 4.99.
