It can be difficult to know what to think about dietary supplements. often, claims are made about the supplement with little or no research to back them up. Fish oil and vitamin D are two of the supplements to look at recently. Studies have been conducted on supplements, their fish and their multiple benefits, but most of the research was done for observation or based on self declaration. A recent large-scale study (called the VITAL study) examined the benefits of each supplement, respectively, and resulted in disappointing results. The Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a health and wellness benefits society, advises discussing the use of the supplement with a health professional to ensure that the supplement benefits the person in question.
"The use of the supplement should always be discussed with a doctor," said Jennifer Martinez, Director of FEBC. "It's important to make sure that it's something that will benefit you."
This recent study is the first of its kind to use a large, long-term sample of 26,000 healthy adults aged 50 and over, with no history of cancer of heart disease. Participants took either fish oil and vitamin D, or a placebo, fish oil and a placebo or two placebos. It appeared that vitamin D and fish oil had no overall benefit, although a secondary badysis of the data suggested that fish oil reduces the risk of heart attack by 28% . African Americans and people who did not eat a lot of fish were rewarded for getting the most out of the supplement. No serious side effects have been noted with one or the other of the supplements.
Although the benefits of fish oil and vitamin D are not extraordinary, the researchers point out that they both contain essential nutrients for a balanced diet. When starting a type of supplement, it is strongly recommended to discuss with a doctor its food and health needs. Thanks to the benefits of FEBC's telemedicine, members can quickly and easily access non-emergency medical advice without having to leave their homes.
"At FEBC, our goal is to help our members live healthy and happy lives," Martinez said. "Our telemedicine benefits are just one more way to help the health and well-being of our members."
