Consumption of human placenta products is a risk for mothers and babies: Health Canada

OTTAWA – Health Canada is warning mothers and others who may be taking human placenta preparations to be at risk for themselves and their baby.

According to the federal ministry, the consumption of human placenta could lead to bacterial or viral infections in mothers or their babies. The risk is higher if someone ingests the placenta of another person.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the case of an infant hospitalized for infection with bacteria found in the placenta tablets her mother had ingested.

Some health claims claim that the consumption of human placenta preparations helps prevent postpartum depression, increases energy levels and boosts bad milk production.

However, Health Canada states that there is no scientific evidence to support such claims and that products containing human placenta are not permitted for consumption in Canada.

There are a variety of methods for preparing the placenta for consumption, including steaming, cooking, dehydration and encapsulation. Third-party placenta products are considered drugs and are subject to the requirements of the Food and Drugs Act.

Health Canada has sent several compliance letters to clinics and individuals offering human placenta encapsulation services to clarify regulatory requirements. The ministry says it will take regulatory action if a health risk is identified.
