Heavyweight Derrick Lewis stunned Las Vegas fans with a final knockout of Alexander Volkov in the final seconds of the third round. He then acknowledged in his legendary octagon interview that he was exhausted and needed to "do more cardio".
"I'm not trying to fight for a title yet, not without a gas tank like this."
Less than a month later, Lewis will enter the octagon on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden to face Daniel Cormier for the UFC heavyweight championship.
Stephen A. Smith wondered if White really believed that Lewis – who has just signed an agreement with Popeyes for life – is physically ready to fight again. White argued that Lewis would actually benefit from a shorter layoff and subsequently called Smith in a separate interview.
"Stephen and I got into the subject yesterday and Stephen A. is wrong. He's so wrong he's crazy. First of all, he talks about the fact that [Lewis] is back from fights, right? It's the best thing you can do as a fighter! You are in the best shape of all time!
He made three difficult rounds when he was exhausted and he came out of a big camp. He comes back, takes some time to heal the bumps and bruises that you have, then immediately returns to the camp. First of all, it has never been so beautiful. It looks amazing right now! Derrick Lewis is leaner than I've ever seen, and this guy can turn off anybody's lights at any point in the fight. Whether it's the first five seconds of the fight or the last five seconds of the fight, this guy can knock you out. So it's a very dangerous fight for Cormier and Stephen A. – you're wrong again, my friend. "
