Just in time for the Christmas shopping season, Dell announced that its online market had gone through a "cybersecurity incident" and reset the pbadwords of all Dell.com customers.
On Wednesday, Dell issued a statement informing customers of the situation. It begins: "You may have heard of a cyber security incident involving Dell.com". In fact, we had not heard of this incident, as today's announcement is the first time an individual has spoken about it. The company said it noticed and "disturbed" for the first time, on November 9, an unauthorized activity on its site. Dell claims that hackers were only trying to extract the names of customers, email addresses and hashed pbadwords. The fact that the pbadwords were hashed should have provided an extra layer of security if someone was actually able to retrieve the information. Dell has recommended that you reset it everywhere if you reuse your Dell.com pbadword on other sites.
