Masked youths fired fireworks at the Israeli police near Jerusalem's largest mosque on Friday and police charged the mosque with confronting them, Reuters television reported.
It was not immediately clear whether the police entry occurred before or after the fireworks.
A spokesman for the Israeli police said that firecrackers and stones were thrown at the mosque police of al-Aqsa "for some unknown reason".
Police were cleaning the compound in response, he said.
Several rioters were arrested, while others barricaded themselves inside the mosque.
