Five people were killed and three others injured Tuesday afternoon in a traffic crash near the Dead Sea in southern Israel.

The accident occurred on Highway 90 between Ein Gedi Park and the Dead Sea, when two vehicles crashed during a head-on collision.

Of the five people killed in the accident, three are children and two are adults.

According to a report by MDA emergency services, apart from the five seriously injured victims, two others are in a moderate state and a third was slightly injured. The third victim, a man in his fifties suspected of being the driver, was slightly injured.

One of the two vehicles involved in the accident caught fire, said MDA. Five people, including three children, were trapped inside the burning vehicle. The fire and rescue teams recovered the five people from the vehicle.

"It was a terrible accident," said MDA ambulance driver Sarah Yisraeli and MDA's first responder, Amiram Muallem. "When we arrived on the scene, we spotted two vehicles on the road. One of them was burning while it was carrying pbadengers – it was a terrible sight. "

"Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and then recovered the people trapped inside. There were three people in the second vehicle, including a woman of about 52 years old and a girl of about 12 years old who were slightly injured. After giving them first aid on the spot, we evacuated them to an MDA helicopter, which had landed nearby, at Soroka hospital to treat them with head and limb injuries.
