Sources in Gaza's health system said that Abera Mengistu, the Israeli citizen detained by Hamas, received a video clip of his mother and brother in 2016.

The clip, in which Mengistu's mother, Agernesh, and brother Ilan demand the release of Abera, was handed over to a delegation of the organization Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), which then informed by sources the captive.

By the end of 2016, Mengistu's family had asked the organization to give the images and some medical documents in Hamas, documenting Mengistu's fragile mental state.

PHR contacts, leaders of Gaza's health system, confirmed that the clip and documents reached those who held Mengistu in Gaza and Mengistu himself. But the organization had no further confirmation that Mengistu saw the video.

In the clip, Mengistu's mother asks how Hamas can be so ruthless and notes that his son Abera entered Gaza involuntarily, being ill. "Why does not Hamas let him go?" I cried day and night for two years, "I want to see him, if I will necessarily come to him, show me my son," she said.

His brother is filmed saying that the family suffers and has a broken heart for over two years.

"Every day I see my mother crying and saying, where is my son Abera, whom I have raised with dedication and tremendous hardship in Ethiopia and here in Israel too, she asks me every day," Why is he restrained? What is it they have to do with him? This is not a soldier, he has not gone to hurt anyone, that is, he is not a soldier. is the child of the poor and the unfortunate, I also have a heart, I am a mother too, why do not they let him go? "And I have no answer for her . "

Doctors for Human Rights has been working for two years with the medical establishment and the Gaza authorities to obtain information about Mengistu and Hisham Sayed, an Israeli Bedouin missing since entering Gaza in 2015. The organization hopes to arrange visit of a doctor to both, but have not received any information on their condition. The group received no further information that the documents sent by the Mengistu family reached their destination.

The organization also informed Israeli security that the tape and the documents had been transferred. The medical delegations of the non-profit organization are one of the few executives in which Israeli citizens can enter Gaza-like doctors to treat Palestinians or to train local doctors.

The video transfer is not the only case where the Mengistus have bypbaded the Israeli bureaucracy, or the government's coordinator on the case, Yaron Blum, a former Shin Bet officer who replaced Lior Lotan at the post in October.

In the past, family members traveled to the United Nations in New York, accompanied by Israeli Ambbadador Danny Danon, and had talks with contacts in the United States.

A source in the knowledge told Haaretz that the family had made contact with Doctors for Human Rights at a time when their relationship with Lotan had encountered an obstacle. A video had been published of a conversation that Lotan had had with the Mengistu family, in which he demanded that they not take notes on their conversations. Lotan had told them that "to charge" the history of the Ethiopian community of Israel on the case was likely to add a year to the time when the prisoner might be detained at Gaza.

PHR President Prof. Rafi Walden said it was our human and moral duty to secure the release of the Israelis detained in Gaza, whose condition is unknown. He said that the organization had been acting discreetly with his contacts in Gaza's medical system to ensure that Mengistu was visited by an independent doctor. Walden called on Hamas to end the nightmare for Abera, Hisham and their families.
