The Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood also housed the Shamasna family, a Palestinian family who was expelled from her home by Israel while she lived there for 53 years.

In September, Israeli police expelled the Palestinian family, giving way to Israeli settlers whom the authorities considered legal occupants.

East Jerusalem was occupied by Israel in 1967 and later annexed to Israel in the 1980s. Approximately 200,000 Israeli Jews are currently living in East Jerusalem in settlement houses considered illegal under international law.
