The Ministry of Defense detonated some 350 landmines in the Golan Heights on Tuesday afternoon, as part of a government project to clear the country's trapped fields.

The 350 mines exploded in several bursts in a minefield near the Jacob's Daughters Bridge in the southern Golan Heights.

The explosion was originally scheduled for 12 hours, but was repelled several times. Shortly after 1:30 pm, the detonation began, but only the first line of mines exploded due to a disconnection in the wires between the explosives.

The rest exploded a few minutes later

The detonation was carried out by the National Authority for Mine Action, which has already cleaned about 1,000 mines in the area since 2011, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense. It has a number of minefields still active in the Golan Heights and along the Jordanian border, mainly remnants of the country's wars.

Some of these mines were planted by the Israeli army, others by Syria and Jordan. In 2011, the government pbaded legislation requiring all minefields in the nation to be cleared after a number of high-profile cases of people, including children, were injured by mines.
