Stars Jaime Camil and Yael Grobglas weigh in on ending the show after five seasons at the American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Gala on Thursday night.
As announced earlier this year, Jane the Virgin will end with its fifth season, but the cast of The CW hit is ready for it.
Jaime Camil, who stars as Rogelio de la Vega on the show, said that he is entering the final season with a celebratory mindset, rather than focusing on missing his co-stars and saying goodbye to the successful series.
“We like to concentrate more on the joy the show has given us as professionals, as actors, and what the show has given to the fans and what the show has achieved for the network — the recognition, the awards, all of the focus on that,” Camil told THR at the American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Gala on Thursday night.
He added that not only does he not know how Jane the Virgin will end, but because of showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman’s top-secret lock on the scripts, he doesn’t know what any of the season 5 episodes will hold.
“When we are super lost and we have pain on our face, [Urman] looks at us and is like ‘Okay, I’m going to tell you a little bit about how this is going to resolve because I see that you’re suffering right now,'” Camil explained. “Only then will she share a little bit of information about what’s happening with the show.”
Yael Grobglas, who plays Petra, echoed her lack of knowledge on the show’s ending, but hopes that her character has “a happy ending because she’s become almost a friend at this point. We’re very connected to our characters, we get very emotional at the table reads, so I’d like to see good things happen for her.”
The actress also stressed the importance that the series is “ending on our terms,” as “it’s great not to have it drag on for too long and get boring or end before we’re ready, so it’s really ending when everyone is ready and having an opportunity to wrap up the story the way we want to is really great.”
The two Jane the Virgin stars attended the American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Gala to support Ben Silverman, who serves as an executive producer on the show. Camil hosted the Los Angeles event, which celebrated Silverman’s father, famed composer and musician Stanley Silverman, for his 80th birthday.
Held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, the gala included a performance by the Israel Philharmonic in honor of Stanley Silverman, a Grammy winner who has worked in musical theater and alongside Paul Simon, Sting and James Taylor.
During his speech honoring his father, Ben Silverman described him as being “driven by art and not by fame, and it’s so different in the culture that we’re living in today, to see people’s choices in what they’re pursuing being based about the result and not the process. I learned early on from my dad that the process is the thing, the impact is the reward.”
Ali Larte, Rob Morrow and Eric Mabius were also in attendance at the gala, with proceeds benefitting music education programs of the IPO, which impacts thousands of children and young adults in Israel each year.
