What Guy Thomas, Dunbar coach, holds about Jones, is his reaction to adversity. He trained her in fifth grade at the AAU then four years of success in high school.
As a freshman, Jones won the 100-meter and 300-meter county and district titles before winning the silver medal at the regional championships. She had a second year campaign where she won a regional championship in the 300 hurdles before suffering a tear in the ACL
Thomas was the direct witness of Jones to return to the track three times a week
. "She worked it (end to end)," Thomas said. "She is really mature for her age. It's realized that falling and getting up is part of the success."
Jones came back in 2017 during the Lee County Athletics Championships for finish second. A few weeks later, she won a regional crown in the 100 hurdles
"She came back when everyone was at her peak and she was not there," said Thomas. "And she always showed us everything."
Jones had hope to walk on the Kentucky track team next season, Thomas-Mora said of his daughter who was also ready to begin the premedical program of the # 39 school next month. Jones specializes in biology and also studies Islamic studies.
Thomas cried when he heard the news of Jones' disappearance
"I just lost him," he recalls. "I'm destroyed, I'm really destroyed, why does it happen to her? … She's great at everything she does, she was number one in the service of her community. Against all that, the track is where it was the weakest. That says a lot about it. "
But counting Jones is not an option for Thomas. He knows too much about her to do it.
"I hope and pray for her that she is fighting somewhere," says Thomas. "If she is alive, she fights, she would fight until the end until she can not fight anymore."
