Lebanon arrests senior army officer for collaboration with Israel – report

A senior Lebanese army official was arrested because he was suspected of collaborating with Israel, according to an article in the Lebanese Arabic-language newspaper Al-Akhbar on Monday.

The man was suspected of having removed files of wanted persons suspected of working for Israel and of having accepted bribes in exchange for the release of detainees.

A number of other officers and civilians were also arrested because they were suspected of being involved, the newspaper reported, considered pro-Hezbollah.

The senior officer was first questioned by the investigators of his unit. He was released and during this time prosecutors collected more evidence against him. He was arrested three weeks ago, according to the newspaper, and transferred to Rihaniyeh Military Prison.

Five others were arrested, including three members of the same family who were later released. A man and a woman remain in detention, the newspaper reports.
