Early voting in Chicago in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on the city's North Side.

Heather Bennett, a 45-year-old branded marketer, said: "It's going to be a big deal. "My 15-year-old said he wanted to see that bracelet on my wrist when he gets home from school," she said.

"I do not think it matters what your affiliation is, the important thing is to go vote."

Vince Lerario, a 46-year-old IT executive, said he was in favor of the polls, but the neighborhood was largely liberal and the outcome would not be a surprise. "I voted Democrat down the ballot, it's just a referendum on the current state of affairs."

He also said he did some research. "That can be just as important," said Democratic the precinct, he said.

In Winnetka, Ill., Elizabeth Schroeder is a political independent. She wants to see President Trump's authority checked in Washington for a Democrat for Congress, but supported by a Republican candidate for governor because she believes that it is more likely to pull out of its fiscal noise dive.

"I care about gun control, I want to see Roe v. Wade stay in place and I want to keep Obamacare, a lot of people depend on it, "she said outside her polling place at the downtown of this wealthy Chicago suburb. "I want to see a Democratic House because I want to see them."

To that end, Mrs. Schroeder voted for Jan Schakowsky, the Democrat incumbent for Congress.

"I do not know if anyone ran against her," she said.

The Illinois governor's race was a tougher choice. Mrs. Schroeder is not a fan of Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, but she thinks Candidate Democrat J.B. Pritzker is not up to the job. Mr. Pritzker, the trillionaire scion of one of the state's wealthiest families, pulled the toilets out of his Chicago mansion to make it uninhabitable and avoid paying taxes.

"That's terrible," Mrs. Schroeder said.

Carl Lane, a 54-year-old consultant in Winnetka, is a registered Republican whose mission is on behalf of Mr. Trump.

"Simplistic, exaggerated, hyperbolic," Mr. Lane said when asked to describe the president. "Every single day he embarrbades me an American."

Mr. Lane voted for Jan Schakowsky, the Democrat incumbent U.S. representative, to try and limit the damage Mr. Trump doing to America. He also voted for Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. His chief concern for Illinois is the mbadive debt and worst-in-the-nation credit rating.

"The pension issue is a mess," he said. "People are leaving the state and they are going to continue to get rid of it."
