One night after perhaps the worst defeat of the season, the New York Yankees rebounded and tied the series with a 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Masahiro Tanaka threw a complete blank game, and the bats did just enough to finish the job. The win also broke a five-game losing streak against the Rays.
The Yankees started strong in the first inning, while Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge smoked singles in the left field. They advanced on wild ground, and Gardner ran home on a Didi Gregorius pitch for the first run. It was efficient little ball at its best, and after all that the Yankees went through in Monday's loss, it was encouraging to hit first.
Tanaka attacked the mound for the Yankees, and he worked everything from the beginning. He had precise control, requiring only 42 shots for his first four perfect innings. He pulled out seven of the first eleven hitters he faced, and did so using his three throws. Tanaka looked like he was on Tuesday night
Yonny Chirinos started for the Rays and played well. Perspective number 20 of the Rays gave rise to many strikes and seemed to belong to the big leagues. He settled after the first run, and only gave one shot on his next three games without a goal.
The Yankees had another crossing at fifth turn due to a National League style offensive. With a withdrawal, Chirinos hit Brandon Drury on the wrist with a field, which was later removed from play for Tyler Wade. After Neil Walker selected him to third base at a hit-and-run, the Yankees had riders cornering with only one exit. Aaron Boone again reported the hit and run, and while Austin Romine retired, Walker's hustle made sure that the kicker was not a double play at the end of the run . Meanwhile, Wade scored, doubling the Yankees' lead to 2-0.
C.J. Cron finally got the first shot of the day for the Rays in the fifth inning, and Ji-Man Choi followed with a walk. Tanaka recovered however, eliminating Daniel Robertson and aligning his position with aplomb on a well-rounded 3-6-1 double game. The Yankees need their veteran pitchers to take over, and Tanaka absolutely delivered the game Tuesday night.
Chirinos remained until the seventh inning – a real rarity for Rays starters – but it cost him. Miguel Andujar shot a base shot to lead the way and Bird scored a podium double to put two runners in the scoring position without anyone coming out. Although Chirinos pulled Wade out, he walked intentionally with Walker to charge the Romine bases. Romine did her job, raising a sacrificial fly in the right field that put Andujar third in the Yankees. Later in the ninth inning, Andujar equalized a double and scored on a simple Walker, providing even more cushion.
Tanaka did not need a place to win his eighth win of the season. His throwing account was in top form all night, and the only question was how far Boone was letting Tanaka go. In the end, Tanaka came out for the ninth inning and scored his sixth career full set and third career shutout. He allowed only three hits and a walk, and scratched nine rays in the night. It was easily his best performance of the season
The Yankees will go for the series win tomorrow afternoon against the Rays. Luis Cessa will start for the Yankees, he will be opposed by former Yankee and Nathan Eovaldi, the current scorer of the trade deadline.
