The Los Angeles County Public Health Department (LAC) recently confirmed 5 cases of measles. All cases were adults, the majority were not vaccinated and two had recently traveled abroad.
LAC DPH is currently investigating multiple exposures in adults and children related to these cases.
Health officials urge residents who have not been fully immunized against measles to take two doses of this vaccine to contact their health care provider to better protect their health and prevent the spread of measles to other people.
"We will likely see new cases of measles in Los Angeles County. It is therefore important if you or any of your acquaintances present the symptoms of measles or if you have been exposed to measles to immediately contact your health care provider before seeking treatment, "said Muntu. Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer. "The best way to protect yourself and prevent the spread of measles is to get vaccinated against measles, with two doses of measles vaccine being 97% effective in preventing measles." Public Health recommends the following:
- All children should receive two doses of measles vaccine. The first must be administered between 12 and 15 months and the second between 4 and 6 years. Written confirmation from the attending physician or another clinician should be retained. Vaccination can be given between 6 and 11 months, if one is concerned about direct exposure to measles or if one is planning to go to places where the measles outbreak is recent.
- All others must locate a written check indicating that they have received 2 doses of measles vaccine during their lifetime. The recommendation for the second dose was only made in 1989 and many adults received only one dose.
- Those who are unable to locate the written verification of 2 doses of measles immunization should receive an immediate dose and a second dose within 4 weeks.
The following sites have been identified as potential exposures to measles:
- Tom Bradley International Airport, at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), arrived at Gate 218 on April 1 from 18:30 to 21:00.
- University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Franz Hall on April 2, 4 and 9 and Boelter Hall on April 2 and 9 from 10am to 6pm.
- Main University of California, Los Angeles, Main Library, April 11 from 11:00 to 15:00.
- Restaurant El Pollo Loco, 1939, boul. Verdugo, La Cañada Flintridge, April 11th from 2pm. at 16:30
- El Sauz Tacos, 4432 San Fernando Road, Glendale, April 13 from 1:30 pm. at 16:00
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that is transmitted from person to person. A person with measles can pbad the disease on to other people even before they have any symptoms. Most people who have not been vaccinated against measles will be vaccinated if they come in contact with the virus.
