The village scenes of man break the spell, confusing the story; and rendering Indian villagers dramatically equivalent to animals gives us an unacceptable kind of orientalism. As always, we still have to think about the non-Darwinian fact that Mowgli has no greater kinship with cunning monkeys than with all the other monkeys.
Shere Khan is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch; Akela of Peter Mullan; Christian Bale's Bagheera and Cate Blanchett's Kaa Wife – Scarlett Johansson did it last time.
