Last week, NBA star player Draymond Green traveled to Israel, where he met with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in what initially appeared on social media as a really fun trip.
"It's not every day that I meet an All-Star," joked Rivlin at the time. He called looking at Green playing "a real pleasure" and hoped it was "only to be the first of many visits" for Green.
The Golden State Warriors star was also seen smiling at a border police training center behind a big rifle.
Israeli police even posted a video of green firearms in a training center on Instagram.
Unsurprisingly, this part of Green's trip organized by the IDF Friends has sparked criticism from leftist groups and activists.
"You played," wrote Shaun King, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist. "Speaking a toothy smile with a sniper rifle in Israel during a trip sponsored by the IDF Friends is so horribly offensive, they have recently shot hundreds of unarmed Palestinians with these rifles."
Dave Zirin, the sports director of The Nation, asked why Green would refuse a visit to President Donald Trump's White House but would say yes to Israel.
"Why go on a tour organized by the IDF Friends Why reject Donald Trump and accept the invitation of Rivlin Why visit the border counter-terrorism police units so soon after the May mbadacre? "It's frankly shocking to see Draymond Green smile and shoot gunshots in his company (Border Police). These anti-terrorist border police units are part of an army that shot and killed more than 60 Palestinians demonstrating at the border in May less than two months ago. "
According to the Jerusalem Post, FIDF's Midwest region executive director, Tamir Oppenheim, led Green across the country. The basketball star "learned about different guns that the force [Counterterrorism Unit] uses and played basketball at the sports center [unit’s] that FIDF supporters in Michigan donated."
