Neo-Nazi tried to kill Jews – and was acquitted

In what the prosecution has called "the most serious legal error" in the history of Düsseldorf, the city's district court acquitted on Tuesday a neo-Nazi accused of 39, bombing Jewish immigrants in 2000.

The suspect, 52 -Nazi Ralf Spies, was accused of planting a plastic bag containing a homemade bomb at Dusseldorf Station ] of Wehrhahn. After the explosion, the bomb wounded ten people, six of whom were Jews from the former Soviet Union.

Although the prosecution demanded a life sentence, neo-Nazi Ralf Spies was acquitted of 12 counts of attempted murder. The German authorities had provided more than 900 tips, including recorded phone calls in which Spies admitted to having participated in the attack.

According to Chief Prosecutor Ralf Herrenbrueck, the motive of Spies in the attack was: to keep his neighborhood "clean".

In 2014, while he was imprisoned for another crime, Spies boasted to another detainee that he had perpetrated the Dusseldorf bombing.
