A battalion chief of the Alameda County Fire Department had to undergo reconstructive emergency surgery after being attacked by a pit bull on the scene of a Saturday morning fire .
Firefighters extinguished a fire. in San Leandro. According to Alameda County spokesman Aisha Knowles, they discovered several dogs, most of which were pit bulls.

Two dogs were killed in the house fire and 18 others survived. It was not immediately clear why there were at least 20 dogs on the premises, but all were taken by Alameda County Animal Control.
