Prime Minister and Defense Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on Wednesday with former IDF leader Benny Gantz, according to the spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office, without mentioning Gantz's expected entrance. in political life.
The meeting took place as part of Netanyahu's consultations on security issues after his appointment as Minister of Defense. He met with former Defense Ministers and IDF Chiefs of Staff.
The Prime Minister met with former Defense Minister Amir Peretz and Moshe Arens. He will meet with former Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and former IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi in the coming days.
Sources close to Netanyahu said the presence of the prime minister's military secretary at all meetings was a sign that they were not discussing politics.
But for political reasons, Netanyahu will not meet two of his fiercest critics, former Defense Ministers Ehud Barak and Moshe Yaalon.
Gantz staff said he would enter politics when the election is called. He kept his political options open.
Gantz could run for the next Knesset under the banner of a new party called Achi Israeli, formed in July by Yeruham Mayor Michael Biton and Haredi Women College founder Adina Bar-Shalom.
The Netanyahu-Gantz meeting was first revealed by Walla News political correspondent Tal Shalev. A poll last week revealed that if Gantz stood at the helm of the Zionist Union, he would win 26 seats, and if he presented himself at the head of a new party, he would would win 19.
