Queensland heat wave decimates bat population | 1 NEWS NOW

Thousands of heat-stressed bats fall from trees and pose a health hazard in the far north of Queensland, while a record heat wave hits the region.

It is estimated that about 3,500 flying foxes have perished since the beginning of furnace-like conditions, a spokesman for the Cairns Regional Council said today.

Health officials have warned residents not to handle flying foxes in distress after an outbreak of bites and scrapes. About 15% of bats carry the potentially lethal Australian lyssavirus.
