A night after playing 18 innings in the third matchThe Red Sox and Dodgers needed only nine standard runs to decide the fourth game of the 2018 World Series on Saturday night. The Red Sox came out victorious thanks to a great return at the end of the race this wiped out a deficit of 4-0. They won 9-6 (box score). Boston leads the series 3-1.
Fillesse, left-handed Rich Hill and powerful southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez fought in a pitching duel for five innings before the Dodgers scored four in the sixth. The Red Sox rallied to equalize the mark in the seventh and eighth inning and, in the ninth inning, Rafael Devers hit the singles. The fifth potentially decisive match will take place on Sunday night at 8pm. AND, which can be streamed on fuboTV (Free Trial).
Here's all you need to know about Game 4 of the World Series.
The first step was excellent
Kirk Gibson, the NHL's MVP in 1988 with the Dodgers and author of one of the most iconic circuits in the history of baseball, gave up the first pitch before match 4. Well, no . Gibson caught the first pitch. Hall of Fame member Dennis Eckersley, who started Gibson, threw the first pitch in a track suit. Check it out:
Pretty cool. Eckersley has been a great home run sport over the years. This is one of the most recognizable moments in history and it could be either disappointing or kissing. He chose to accept it and this makes it even more fun.
Maximum Puig
It was only at the sixth inning that a rider reached second base in the fourth match. For one or the other team! Not a single rider pbaded the first goal until Justin Turner shoots a double inside the bag of the third goal, with a withdrawal in the sixth. Double Trainer Enrique Hernandez was ranked third and prompted the Dodgers to intentionally walk Manny Machado to charge goals.
The Red Sox nearly escaped the confusion. Instead, the Dodgers broke the ice when the receiver, Christian Vazquez, threw a custom-made double ball, made by 3-2-3. First baseman Steve Pearce sent the ball home and Vazquez's return shot was off-line. This allowed Turner to score in second place and give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
A hitter later, all the Puig went wild. Take it away, Yasiel Puig:
Lordy. The three home Puig races have apparently broken the game – as much as a 4-0 lead can be considered "open" anyway – and wow, there is a lot to see there. Look at the bat. Watch Rodriguez poking his glove with frustration. Look at the crowd. So much emotion. I like everything about it. It's the best of the series after the season.
This is the third World Series World Series win for Puig, which connects it to the largest number of Cuban-born players ever. The list:
- Jose Canseco: 3
- Tony Perez: 3
- Yasiel Puig: 3
- Yuli Gurriel: 2
- Sandy Amoros, Bert Campaneris, Tony Olivo, Zoilo Versalles: 1 each
The obvious question: why was Rodriguez still on the mountain to confront Puig? It is possible that the 18-leg match on Friday night means the Red Sox have an exhausted bullpen, but Matt Barnes was warming up and was likely ready to enter. (He arrived right after the homer.) Puig was much better against right-handed (0.921 OPS) than left-handed (0.628 OPS) this year and has a reverse division for his career, although Puig saw Rodriguez for the third time. Given the final result, the decision to stay with Rodriguez did not matter.
Rodriguez started with zero days off
OK, he only threw six shots in Match 3 on Friday night and 16 shots in the last 10 days, but Rodriguez still started Match 4 with zero days off. It had been almost a century since a pitcher had started part of the World Series without a day's rest. The list:
- 2018 Game 4: Eduardo Rodriguez, Red Sox
- 1924 Game 3: Firpo Marberry, Senators
- Thu 6 of 1911: Red Souls, Giants
- 1910 Game 5: Mordecai "Three Fingers" Brown, Cubs
- 1908 Game 2: Orval Overall, Cubs
- 1906 Game 6: Doc White, White Sox
Firpo Marberry? Red Ames? Orval in general? People are excellent baseball names. MLB needs more Firpos. Anyway, Rodriguez has done quite well in zero day rest, at least until the Puig home race. He launched 93 shots after not throwing more than 30 shots since Oct. 6 or more than 50 shots since Sept. 20. Rodriguez threw 78 total playoff throws before Saturday night.
In addition, Rodriguez was hit by a throw in the third inning. Took a fast ball to the right forearm. Rodriguez was the first pitcher to be hit by a World Series throw in half a century, as left-handed Mickey Lolich overthrew the Cardinals, right-handed Nelson Briles, in the fifth game of the 1968 World Series.
Hill dazzled
What a performance of Rich Hill. There had been some pitcher dramas after Match 3 – Hill was to start Match 4 before the Dodgers moved on to TBA and then to Hill (coach Dave Roberts envisioned using a opener) – but Hill took the mound in Game 4, and he held the Red Sox unsuccessfully for four innings. The single to the right of Vazquez was the only hit that he allowed in the night.
Hill is the first pitcher to allow no shots in more than six rounds of work in a World Series game since Orlando Hernandez and David Cone did the same thing twice for the 1999 Yankees at Games 1 and 2 against the Braves. Hill is the first Dodger with such a start in the history of the World Series, if you can believe it. He was wonderful. He gave Roberts and Dodgers a lot more than they expected.
Madson hit again
Ryan Madson has done it again. He is now 0 for 7 legacy runners stranded in the World Series. Roberts took it to the seventh inning with two riders on base and, after Jackie Bradley Jr. grabbed second place for the second inning of the inning, Madson left a turnaround over the plate for hitter-hitter Mitch Moreland. Moreland hit near the top of the stands in the right field for a three-point homerun that turned a 4-0 deficit into a 4-3 deficit for the Red Sox.
The Red Sox, who had two hits at home in the regular season, now have two hits in the World Series. (Eduardo Nunez had a draw against Alex Wood in the first game.) In addition, the Red Sox are only the third team of all time with several innings at home in a world series, joining the 1975 Red Sox and the 1959 Dodgers. Baseball is a flat circle.
As for Madson, the seven legacy riders to whom he scored this series are the biggest of the season. He only appeared in three games! After the second game, in which Madson inherited the bases and allowed all three points to score, Roberts said that Madson was "our guy for a long time" and that this is why he occupied a important place. Roberts was burned using Madson with men on the base in games 1 and 2, and now again in match 4.
Another burst backup for Kenley
Another day, another attempt to save two rounds, another tied victory allowed by Kenley Jansen. Bradley gave him a solo shot in the eighth inning on Friday night. On Saturday, Pearce called Jansen for a tied solo shot in the eighth game. For the action sequence:
The fourth match was the eighth career appearance of the World Series for Jansen, and in those eight appearances he allowed four home runs. Kenley has allocated 13 homers in 71 2/3 regular season heats this year after never giving more than six homers during another season of his career. The Dinger virus has caught up with Kenley this year and this post-season.
Also, know what's crazy? Before Pearson, the Boston 1-2-3-4 hitters were a combined total of 0 vs. 41-0 for 41! – in games 3 and 4 at Dodger Stadium. It's almost impossible to believe given the Red Sox's talent at the top of their lineup. The draw in Pearce ended a very long collective crisis for the top three batters of the order.
Devers has provided great success
As they entered the fourth game, the Dodgers were perfect 54-0 when they took at least a four-point lead this season. They are now 54-1 after taking a four-point lead. Moreland and Pearce scored points to score the first goal and Devers offered the first leg in the ninth. Here is the great proverbial success:
Brock Holt solved the problem with a small ball on the ground in the center of the bag of the third goal against the quarterback. Devers was announced as the batter-cleaver and the Dodgers apparently tried to heat Wood in the register, but could not do it in time. Devers then faced the rightful Dylan Floro. His ground ball had eyes and gave the Red Sox a 5-4 lead.
Devers now has 14 points in 14 career playoff games. At age 22 and three days, he is the youngest player to have participated in the race at the ninth inning or later of a game of the World Series since Edgar Renteria solo single in the seventh game of the 1999 World Series for the Marlins. After Devers gave the Red Sox the lead, Pearce and Xander Bogaerts teamed up to complete four sets of insurance, and Craig Kimbrel closed the table in the ninth to clinch the win. (Kimbrel allowed Hernandez to win two relatively meaningless home races.)
The Red Sox are at one victory
One more win and the Red Sox will be world champions for the fourth time in 15 years. Historically, teams with a 3-1 lead on the series win the series 84.5% of the time. That's 86.7% of the time in the World Series. The Red Sox now have three chances to win a match. Boston lost only three times in a regular season. They are well placed, but this last victory is always the most difficult.
