for you?
Reiner: I like not doing much. I like to read or maybe I will do a crossword game and then (go out) have lunch with the family. For dinner, my wife and I do something at home. There are so many interesting things on TV these days that it's hard to find the time to do everything, but we try.
How did "Shock and Awe" become your
current project?
I wanted to tell how we got to Iraq in 2003. I was old enough to fish during the Vietnam War. I could not believe with Iraq that we were going to war again on the basis of lies. I felt like a parent whose child runs on the street and you can not save him from being hit by the truck. I wanted to tell this story and first thought that I would do it as a satire, but I could not get a script that I liked. Then I tried to do it as a dramatic film about the war. It did not work. When I saw this documentary about four journalists who were right, I knew that I could break through the story.
Another part of the movie
is a very personal story
of a young soldier.
I saw a documentary about this young man from a military family. He signed up and went to Afghanistan. Before he knew it, he was sent to Iraq. In a week, he exploded and lost the use of his legs. There is a line in the movie that is really true. Tommy Lee Jones says, "When the government (expletive), the soldiers pay the price."
Your film shows the power of the press.
It is so important for the press to hold responsible power. When the government says something, just ask one thing: is it true? There has never been any tangible proof that there were weapons of mbad destruction. These four reporters asked if it was true or not … and it was not true. I find this message resonates with what is happening now. The press is attacked. There are no alternative facts. There are just facts.
What do you think of the division of our country?
We have been divided for a very, very long time. It's really scary. What weighs in the balance is democracy.
Are you full of hope
l & # 39; future?
I am very scared, but I also believe in this country and I believe that there are institutions that will hold. I also believe in the kindness of people and I know that it will emerge.
On a much lighter note, you have been in the show business all your life. Your trips had to include Vegas, yes?
I spent a lot of time in Vegas – since the age of 16 and trying to sneak into the casinos to play. I have seen so many good numbers and performances on these Vegas scenes. As for my favorite memory of Vegas, several years ago, a guy was sitting next to me at one of the tables. He earned $ 10,000 and left. I told the boss of the mine: "It's great." He said, "This money is going to cost him a lot of money." I asked why. He replied, "Because now he thinks he can win."
