Shimon Peres memorial unveiled in the Albanian capital

A memorial of the late President Shimon Peres was unveiled Thursday in the Albanian capital, Tirana, a sign of friendship between Israel and the predominantly Muslim country.

The Star of David carved to the effigy of the Israeli ruler was consecrated nearly two years after the death of Peres, and was the initiative of Israeli Deputy Ambbadador Yuval Fischer .

Fischer called the monument "a tribute to the great friendship between these two countries."

Yoni Peres, the son of the former president, attended the ceremony.

"Tirana is a beautiful city, and people are warm and loving," he said. "It was a moving experience."

Diplomatic relations were formally established between Albania and Israel in 1991, and in 1994, Peres became the first Israeli leader to make a state visit to Tirana.

Peres, the last founder of Israel Fathers, died in September 2016 at the age of 93 years.
