To mark the 100th Remembrance Day in Canada, a Stratford Second World War veteran will be sharing stories of his time with the Royal Navy this Saturday evening at St. James’ Anglican Church.
At 92, Teddy Payne has been a goodwill ambbadador for Stratford since he moved to the city in 1990. A celebrated artist and author, Payne will be sharing stories of his and his father’s war-time experiences beginning at 7 p.m.
At only 17, Payne signed up with the Royal Navy, serving on convoy duty in the Atlantic and helping to liberate the Philippines and Indonesia during the Second World War.
Payne will be joined by actor/singer David Keeley, Anglican minister Tim Elliott on piano, and singer Kirsten Pfaff, who will help blend the veteran’s stories with popular wartime songs. Audience members are invited to sing along, if they wish.
There is no charge for admission. Instead, those who attend will have the option to make an offering, proceeds from which will be donated to The Spafford Children’s Center in Jerusalem, a non-sectarian medical centre started by Payne’s relatives in 1880 that helps those in need regardless of race, religion, or cultural background.
Attendees will also have the option to purchase a book of Payne’s stories and poems from the war. At $20 each, only 100 copies will be available during the reception following the event.
