The ex-husband of a woman from central Israel whose body was found buried in her yard on Tuesday confessed to the murder on Wednesday. The ex-husband was ordered to remain in detention until next Tuesday, while a woman who was interrogated as a possible accessory was released in residence monitored.
Ofira Haim, 56, disappeared from her home in Tel Mond two weeks ago. His car was parked outside the house, with his keys and cell phone inside. One of her daughters returned early from a trip to India when her mother did not answer her calls. She and her sisters filed a police report, and a search was launched.
Haim's body was found on Tuesday, buried under the trees in the yard of his house. Her ex-husband, David Haim, was arrested later on Tuesday.
David Haim confessed to the murder during his detention hearing on Wednesday, but his lawyer said the confession was the result of his client not receiving the necessary medications. David Haim was removed from the courtroom and taken to the hospital after complaining of not feeling well.
The Chaim were divorced for 15 years. David Haim was convicted in 2005 of threatening to kill Ofira Haim for his relationship with another man, whom David Haim had also threatened. According to the indictment, David Haim has threatened to send a friend to "break the bones" of his ex wife's new partner.
Ofira Haim, who had obtained an injunction against her ex-husband, told the court that she was afraid of the murder. "He is obsessed with me … he acted senselessly," she said.
Nava Bechor, Magistrate of Kfar Sava, wrote in the verdict that Ondira Haim feared that her ex-husband would hurt her. "Given his behavior, he may in the future act in this criminal way to achieve his goals or to get rid of his frustrations," wrote the judge. Haim was sentenced to seven months suspended sentence and fined NIS 2,000.
Haim lived in a large house divided into several units, in which lived his ex-husband, his mother-in-law and his eldest daughter and her husband. Police sources said they were investigating the possibility that the murder was caused by financial conflict.
After his disappearance, police said that she had been seen in Netanya, but in recent days, research has focused on citrus groves near Tel Mond, with the # 39; many volunteers help.
