JERUSALEM : The Israeli army on Thursday revealed the details of a new tank that it was developing, more intended to be used in guerrilla conditions.

The Merkava 4 Barak, which is expected to be operational in three years, will be the latest in the Israeli series of Merkava tanks, traditionally focused on fighting conventional forces in neighboring Arab states.

The military said the new model reflected an understanding that conflict theaters are changing.

"The enemy will not necessarily be states and armies, but rather an enemy who uses people," said Brigadier General Guy Hbadon, head of the Armored Corps of the Army.

The "dual-use" tank contains technologies including a detection system that gives his commander a full view of the environment in his helmet

The model – which will also be equipped with a computer system based on artificial intelligence – is designed to be safer in the confines of guerrilla warfare. .

The Israeli army used tanks along the Gaza border as tensions rose during months of protests and clashes that left more than 140 Palestinians dead.
