The Israeli army on Thursday revealed the details of a new tank that it was developing, designed more for use in guerrilla conditions.
The Merkava 4 Barak, which is expected to be operational in three years, will be the latest in the series of Israeli Merkava tanks, traditionally focused on combating the conventional forces of neighboring Arab states.
The military said the new model reflects an understanding that the conflict theaters it faces are changing.
"The enemy will not necessarily be states and armies, but rather an enemy who uses people," said Brigadier General Guy Hbadon, chief of the Armored Corps of the Army.
The dual-purpose tank contains technologies including a detection system that gives his commander a complete view of the environment in his helmet.
The model – which will also be equipped with a computer system based on artificial intelligence – is designed to be safer in the confines of guerrilla warfare. .
The Israeli army used tanks along the border with Gaza, as tensions rose during months of protests and clashes that left more than 140 Palestinians dead.
