JERUSALEM, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) – The Israeli army's technology and telecommunications units will move to a new complex adjacent to Ben Gurion University (BGU) in the south of the country. with an investment of more than 5 billion new shekels (US $ 1.36 billion), the Ministry of Defense and the university said Monday.

The ministry has signed an agreement with the infrastructure company "Shikun & Binui" for the construction of the complex, which should be operational within five years.

The complex should be built in the high-tech park "Gav Yam" adjacent to the university, located in the city of Beer Sheva.

Due to the strategic location of the new base alongside the university, the Israeli government will allocate 55 million new shekels extra for upgrading the university infrastructure.

The additional amount will also be used to recruit academic staff and students and prepare them for high-technology professions for the transfer of soldiers to the south.

The units to be transferred include the IT and Communications Division of FDI Headquarters, the Israeli Air Force Technology Unit and the South Command Headquarters. More than 5,000 soldiers are expected to serve in the new base.

The new project will be built as a "smart base" with innovative planning, architectural design, advanced infrastructure and energy efficiency.
