Sandy Lyle from Scotland sent an iron medium roll along the crisp Carnoustie lawn to start the 147th game of the British Open.
Lyle was chosen to hit the tee shot on Thursday morning under gray skies off the North Sea. He won the Omnium in 1985. In the opening group, Martin Kaymer and Andy Sullivan, two-time world champions, also took part in the tournament. They faced a course that was more yellow than green because of the unusually dry summer in Scotland.
Carnoustie has been called "Car-Nasty" in the recent Opens because it is considered the most difficult of the Open rotation. The championship this year was more of a mystery entering the first round. Fast conditions are difficult, but being so dry means that the rough is thin and vaporous.
