The winter finale of Tuesday That's us"The beginning is the end is the beginning," concluded one of the most shocking cliffhangers in the series: the younger brother of the Pearson family, Jack's (Milo Ventimiglia), Nicky (Michael Angarano) , did not die in Vietnam. In fact, the younger brother Pearson is very much alive – and lives in Pennsylvania.
The episode followed Kevin (Justin Hartley), who was continuing his trip to Vietnam with his girlfriend Zoe (Melanie Liburd) while they were traveling to one of the villages where his father and his uncle had spent time during the Vietnam War. Disappointed at not having learned much about his father's stay in the country, he learned that his uncle was not on the list of dead soldiers in Vietnam. (And a current picture of mail on a table addressed to Nick Pearson clearly shows that his uncle is alive.)
A flash-forward also revealed some important information: Future Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and her eldest daughter Tess go with their wife Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), who is now a dance teacher, to visit Rebecca (Mandy Moore). But it is possible that Future Randall and Future Beth are not yet married.
The scene that preceded, today, showed the most important fight ever organized by Randall and Beth: Randall, knowing that he could not win the Philadelphia election where he stood, wanted always stay in the race. Beth wanted him to retire, and the clash could mean that the couple is in danger.
Also in the episode: Rebecca persuaded her granddaughter Tess to tell her parents that she could love girls; Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) learned that they were going to have a boy. and Kate has decided to return to college and get the final credits she needs to graduate.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke to co-presenters Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger about the cliffhanger, flash-forward and what awaits every Big Three when the series returns from its break in January.
When you wrote Nicky's story, did you always know that he was going to be alive?
Shepherd: It has always been part of our plan. We invented the whole history of Vietnam during the first weeks of our season this year. We had Tim O 'Brien, our consultant for Vietnam, in the writers' room with us and we have always considered it a great story. From the beginning, this has been our plan and then, we have always been our challenge: when do we communicate this different information throughout the season? [The winter finale] felt like the most exciting moment to reveal that he is indeed still there.
How long in future episodes will you reveal what has really happened?
Aptaker: Pretty right now. We are going to start the new year with Kevin, who continues his quest for answers. He is armed with this tiny information that he got from this hotel employee, according to which his uncle did not die in Vietnam. This is what he does with this nugget of information to begin to solve the mysteries of this mystery and to try to get answers. It's the immediate driver of our first two episodes.
Will he share this information with his siblings or his mother?
Shepherd: It will be something that we will actually want it to struggle with. It's a family so united that it's hard to imagine, but it's also a family where everyone comes with very strong opinions and a lot of emotions. He knows that when he tells them that everyone will have a strong point of view on the subject, it is a subject on which he will have to think at length and for a long time. But it's hard to imagine that others will not discover it eventually.
Are we going to see Nicky grow in the new episodes?
Aptaker: Yes, we will. We will see Nicky adult later in the second half of our season.
Is it the same actor with age makeup, or is it a different actor?
Aptaker: That we are not allowed to discuss for the moment.
Zoe is a documentary filmmaker. Does she see anything in this story?
Shepherd: We read the response from Twitter fans and many people have said, for example, that she's only in this adventure for this great documentary that she's going to do. Although we agree that it's really worthy of the documentary and what's going on, I think she really did take this trip for Kevin, to get close to that guy she was crazy about and give him emotional support. But who will say what she will do in the future with all this?
Aptaker: Yes, she has her own documentary on which she is currently focusing on the global water crisis. So I think it will appeal to the part of her brain that loves a good real story, but it's not something she's considering capitalizing in a professional way.
This trip has solidified them as a couple, right?
Shepherd: Absolutely. I think it is a big step for any couple to make their first international trip together and I think that this one could not have been more loaded. Obviously, Kevin is committed for this deeply personal reason and for this very specific trip, and this obviously raised for her emotionally charged problems that she revealed to him. So yes, I think it's safe to say that they're coming home closer than ever. But of course, Zoe has a really complicated past, and proximity in itself can continue to be a problem as they progress together.
The flash-forward revealed that Beth is still alive and that, in the future, Beth, Randall and Tess are going to see Rebecca. The first question is: Is Rebecca still alive? And then question number two is, are Randall and Beth together? Will you reveal these answers as soon as possible?
Aptaker: I think these are two really fair questions that, of course, we can not answer for the moment. But these are the good things to ask yourself. What exactly are the circumstances after visiting Rebecca and because they are certainly not in mourning, according to the behavior of Beth and Randall. And then, Beth and Randall, what's going on? We see nowadays that they are in the most scary place we have ever shown, in terms of marriage and relationships. And then, in this future lightning, it is quite difficult to say what their current relationship status is. These are questions that will be a little slower for us. Of course, we will answer eventually. But not yet.
Speaking of Beth and Randall, their relationship has always been strong. Has any of their previous fights really been as intense as the one going on?
Shepherd: In fact, when we come back for the second half, we will spend from one year to the next with them in a very fun way and see some small snapshots of different difficult moments of their relationship. But it's really scary. I think it's very rare that they've been to this crossroads where Randall really wants something for which he does not want to compromise. I think it's a couple who almost always considers both their needs and advances with each decision. So it's a particularly difficult and scary moment in their marriage for both of them because they do not seem to come to an agreement about it.
Will Randall be wondering if he wants to leave the race? He seemed pretty certain in their conversation but maybe now that he sees what Beth feels, he will reconsider his decision.
Aptaker: I think that, at least in this episode, as we see, he is rather optimistic about his commitment to community and race. But at the same time, it's really scary to say that you are doing something without the support of your partner, especially in a marriage like that of Randall and Beth, where there is so much talk of communication and being on the same page. So we are going to be concerned about whether he is going to stick to his guns or make a turn and agree to take a step back in January when we come back.
Tess going out with her parents seemed like a short bow for such an important story. Will you see her again at all?
Shepherd: Absolutely. I think for us it is something that will continue to play throughout the series. Obviously, she is so young and this is just the beginning of her story, even if she asks herself these questions and feels the need to talk about it aloud and to express what is happening internally, but this situation will continue to evolve over the years. . It's something we'll just check from now. It is now officially part of the fabric of the family and our show.
Her parents started to fight right after she told them this news, will she fear that it concerns her, while this is obviously not the case?
Aptaker: I do not think she's going to blame herself for the tension that reigns in their marriage. It's no longer a case between Tess, then Deja who wants to reconnect with her mother, and Beth always looking for a job and the direction she takes in life there is so much going on here. What Randall says: "I double on this impossible-to-win campaign" is its sense that it's a very selfish, very irresponsible decision and that it's not what it's wants at her husband's house. Tess is only one of many factors that make their home a really tumultuous place at the moment.
The flash-forward showed that Beth is a dance teacher or has a dance school. Is this something you are going to address?
Aptaker: For now, this should be a bit of a headache for our audience. But this is something we will certainly explore and explain during the second half of our season. We have a very special episode to come all the time about Beth and her life outside of Randall and who she was before meeting him. This will answer many questions about why future Beth would preside over all these ballerinas.
Shepherd: Obviously, we are at a time when she is not working and where her future is wide open. We will therefore slowly tell how she finds herself in this building.
Kate has been very successful this season, but this episode ended well for her. She and Toby discover they are going to have a boy and Kate decides to go back to school to finish school.
Shepherd: It was really important for us to finish them for the moment in this joyful place and give them a victory by finding this happy news together. They have lived so much that if someone deserves to win, it is this couple. Which does not mean, because it's our show, that we will continue to sail smoothly, but yes, it's a great victory that we just wanted to let the players have fun and kiss each other.
Obviously, Toby is not better. This is not how it works. But he seems to be on the road to recovery, is not it?
Aptaker: Yeah, I agree that cured, I guess, is not the right word, but I think it's really well placed. I think he's back on his antidepressants; he found the right dosage. He is very optimistic about this baby and this pregnancy, as well as his future with Kate and their future family. In a very, very crazy, tumultuous, drunk last five minutes, having a story that is quite exciting and looking forward and, "Wow, let's have a boy, and I'm going to get these eight latest university credits, "is a very nice balance to some of the saddest moments.
This season's storyline focused on Jack and Rebecca's romantic relationships. Will this continue in the next episodes?
Shepherd: It will continue. We absolutely loved them at that time. We were excited before the start of the season and when we saw how incredibly romantic and incredible Mandy and Milo were at that time, we fell in love with them even more. So, we will definitely show a little more about how their court has unfolded in this chapter of their relationship, and this will likely continue into next season.
Aptaker: Yes, there is so much time and history to tell. I mean, they did not have children until 1980. So this couple and this childless marriage lasted quite a long time. There are a lot of stories out there that we have not even started to address, as Elizabeth said, we are so excited about. With music and clothes, and not having to wear prostheses or wigs, everyone likes to do it. We love time.
Are there other periods of time that you will visit again?
Aptaker: We have not attended high school for a while, so we will go back and finish our senior year with the Big Three, after the fire, after Jack's death, and show how they managed. these paths at the beginning of adulthood, after high school, which really determined their future.
Shepherd: Yes, and we will soon meet a young Beth, who is generating a lot of excitement, and spending time with the young Beth and Randall, which we believe will be a whole other romantic chapter that we have not not yet explored.
Aptaker: Yeah, show me a little more romance.
What else can you say about the first episodes?
Aptaker: I think people should really be looking for answers, especially on Nicky's front and on Randall's front line, pretty much immediately upon our return. We dwell in these stories and answer the following question: what's going on with Randall's political race? And who is this uncle Nicky? Where is he? And do our Pearsons get in touch with him? These are the first two episodes back and I think they'll answer our break questions in a big way.
That's us returns with new episodes in January.
