REFLECTIONS TODAY (19459010) MARK 6: 1-6
Jesus departed from there and came to his hometown, accompanied of his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, "Where did this man have all this, what kind of wisdom was given to him? What powerful actions are forged by his hands! Is not he the carpenter, the son of Mary? and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us? "And they offended him. Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his native place and among his own parents and in his own house." So, he could not perform a powerful action there, apart from healing some sick people by putting his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.
REFLECTION
THEY TAKEN INFRINGEMENT TO HIM. The end of the Gospel describes people who "offend" or who are "scandalized" (Greek eskandalizonto) by what they discover as being the "true" references of Jesus. In other words, who is Jesus does not fit their expectations, and so they reject him.
On the one hand, they see his wonderful works and are amazed at his wisdom; and so, perhaps, they expect it to be someone special, educated, sophisticated. On the other hand, they realize that he is known to them, he is their neighbor and they know so much about him. And so, they conclude that there must be something "fuzzy" in this person, and they choose to ignore him.
It is incredible that our prejudices and prejudices can affect our judgments and decisions. Stories have been told about how some people have been so embarrbaded and embarrbaded by discovering that the person whom they thought to be, or treated as, the driver, has turned out to be the most Bishop that they were waiting for! Yes, we often judge people by their appearance, by their gender or their race, and we are in trouble.
We are told how Jesus' comrades are astonished by his extraordinary teaching and wisdom. This can very well bring them joy and hope. They can say to themselves, "Here's somebody from different, somebody special; he must be sent by God. "But then they are overcome by what they realize to be the background and the references of Jesus, and so the grace of God can not work in them." In fact, this grace, ironically, If the people of Nazareth only discern who is this person whose teaching and wisdom is so extraordinary, they will come to the knowledge that he is the Son of God sent into the world.
