Military prosecutors have indicted Turkish woman Ebru Ozkan for transferring money and other valuables to Hamas.
Ozkan, imprisoned by Israel in the past month, has been charged with several counts of providing services to an unrecognized badociation.
The first charge says that in 2016, while she was traveling to Israel, Ozkan received five bottles of perfume at the airport in Istanbul. He was asked to take them to Israel. Another charge is that she received a charger for a cell phone from one of her colleagues at her work in a research institute in which Hamas members would also be employed. Okzan's attorney told Haaretz that his indictment arose out of political and not legal reasons.
"This is clearly meant to deter Turkish citizens who identify with al-Aqsa." The lawyer said that Okzan was not aware that the people for whom she was bringing money and other items came from Hamas. He said that she had been interrogated in Arabic even though she did not speak it well. She was forced to sign a deformed document, he added.
Ozkan was arrested on June 11, while she was returning home. Since then, she has not been allowed to talk to her family. She was unable to meet a lawyer for the first two weeks and no clbadified information about her was given to the defense.
Ozkan's sister told Haaretz that she had come on a private visit and was not involved in politics. His detention has raised a storm in Turkey and received widespread media coverage. The Turkish Foreign Minister called Ozkan "our sister" and promised to answer in kind.
