New Jersey officials have announced the death of two premature babies with bacterial infections.
The health department is investigating the outbreak of A. baumannii at Newark University Hospital and said Tuesday that newborns had confirmed cases of the bacteria.
They died last week and have not been identified.
A third child with the bacteria is already dead.
The ministry said that the two infants had contracted the infection six weeks ago, but that they had other health problems due to their premature birth, which means that the "baby" had been infected. Bacterial infection may not be the cause of death.
The department said that an investigative team was on site and was investigating hospital policies.
State officials were informed of the infection last month when four cases were confirmed.
The fourth child was released last month.
