As the Oscars season heats up and the world awaits news of the Sundance Film Festival's programming, Variety announces its 10 directors to watch for 2019, composed of recent groups of festivals and films not yet premiered in the coming year, all selected for the quality of their projected films Variety publishers (sometimes as work in progress).

While the star sensation "One Star is Born" between Venice and Toronto is a testament to the birth of Bradley Cooper's new senior director, many of the other talents on the list this year are less known, but no less exciting. Cannes, Ali Abbasi, winner of Un Certain Regard, represents Sweden with his film "Border" during this year's Oscar foreign language race. Film critic and festival programmer Kent Jones won the Tribeca contest with his first feature film "Diane", while Mexican directors Alejandra Márquez Abella ("The Good Girls") and Alonso Ruizpalacios ("Museo") distinguished themselves in the contest sections in Toronto and Berlin. film festivals, respectively.

In a reflection of all the incredible emerging female talents on the horizon, Variety the range is mainly female, with no less than seven women. Variety The 10 to Watch series highlights emerging authors, actors, producers, directors, comics and directors of photography. Each of these lists is prepared by a team of editors, critics and journalists from Variety. Other directors chosen for this honor include Alfonso Cuarón and Wes Anderson, Peter Hedges, Nadine Labaki, Steve McQueen and Pawel Pawlikowski.

The directors selected for this year's list will be honored in person at the Palm Springs International Airport. Film Festival, where Variety will hold a brunch in their honor on Friday, January 4th. The profiles of the directors will be published in the print edition of January 1st. 2019 will be the ninth year of listing in Palm Springs.
