FLORHAM PARK – Technically, it does not matter, after all, Sunday was just the third practice of the training camp for The Jets.
But for the players, it was one of the most anticipated days of the football year. For the first time in a long time, they donned protections and got themselves touch
"It's always interesting to see what races are going to hit, how the pbad protection is going to be, what roads will work," quarterback Josh McCown said. "Because when you put the pads, things change."
There was certainly a different atmosphere at the training on Sunday as the fans crowded the stands, encouraging each shot and catching. There were impressive pieces and others that the Jets would prefer to forget. But overall, it was a step closer to meaningful football.
"It was from top to bottom, good and bad things," McCown said. "And typical of many early days, but overall, it was solid We started slowly but I think we finished well"

Turning heads
Several players impressed during the first padded training session of the Jets season. Here are some that have marked us.
Derrick Jones: The second-year cornerback half has a very good start and kept it during Sunday's practice session. He skipped a road in a seven-on-seven drill to intercept Teddy Bridgewater for the second day in a row. There is a long way to go, but it could be on the right track to gain a role.
Nathan Shepherd: The large rookie defensive lineman looked like a handful for the offensive line before putting on skates. And nothing changed on Sunday when hitting was allowed. Shepherd has a lot to learn, but he may be able to contribute quickly.
"We know that he's strong and we know he's got an engine and that some people are doing advanced moves that's tough against the race," Bowles said. "I just have to learn what he's doing and keep moving on from there." SAM DARNOLD: Why Sam Darnold and the Jets still have not reached an agreement
JETS FAN GUIDE: All you need to know about the training camp
Trenton Cannon: The first day of the race But he showed himself very promising on Day 3. He has an impressive speed that he uses to find holes and turn corners, he broke two beautiful early tracks in practice Sunday.
Parry Nickerson: The rookie corner half did well in the individual exercises throughout the camp and he did the same in team exercises he was just as effective when the Jets were skating and he was on a good start

Room for Improvement
The Quarterbacks: The Game One quarter was not very good during the first three days of practice. McCown seemed out of sync and Teddy Bridgewater was struggling even more
Sam Darnold would certainly have the opportunity to take advantage in this competition. But, of course, he is sitting because of a contractual dispute.
To the credit of Bridgewater and McCown, both rallied towards the end of the practice. But McCown was clearly the best quarterback for the first three days. Maybe Darnold will return soon and change the dynamics
Receivers: None of the Jets' receivers have distinguished themselves in the early days. Part of that was because of the incoherent quarter game. And offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates does not seem to be calling for deep bullets. But it would still be nice to see the Jets get a little more out of their playmakers.
Penalties: The first three days were a little sloppy as the Jets took six penalties in each practice. . For a team that has had big penalty problems in each of the last two seasons, it's worrying. But, it is still very early.
"When you have a lot of new players and you go there for the first time and you learn new things, you will have some penalties," said Bowles. "But as the week goes on and the weeks go on, they will go down."
