Alex Cora explains the Red Sox’ pitching situation ahead of Game 5

Red Sox manager Alex Cora dropped a surprise after Game 4 of the World Series on Saturday night, saying he had changed the rotation and would have David Price start Game 5 on Sunday night instead of Chris Sale.

When Cora met with the Red Sox beat writers on Sunday afternoon, he further explained his decision.

Alex Cora raised some eyebrows and fueled speculation about Chris Sale’s health when he announced after Game 4 that David Price, starting on short rest, would get the ball and the opportunity to close out the Series but the manager insisted that Price is a “full go” and not just an opener.

“He’s done it before,” Cora said. “He’s in a good place, not only mentally but physically. We feel he can do this.”

The other reason for moving Price is up is that he would be available to pitch in relief in potential Games 6 and 7, where that would be more difficult for Sale, rebounding from a stomach issue.

“You guys know about him coming from injury and then his infection in the belly button,’’ Cora joked. “It was tough for his belly button to bounce back and go to the bullpen in Games 6 and 7. And that’s the reason behind it. It’s not that we’re trying to reinvent this. We’re just being prepared.

“If it was a tied series, we were going with our starters on full rest.”
