Xiaomi recently debuted in the UK and the company announced that it would be holding flash sales with crazy deals. The flash sale wasn’t just any flash sale, the company said one of its phones, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, would be available at just £1 ($1.30).
Mi 8 Lite For Just £1
A price of less than two dollars for a phone, originally sold for £279, is a crazy deal and that meant many were on the website to get their hands on one. The customers visited the site but quickly found out that the smartphones were sold out.
It later emerged that the phones were extremely difficult to buy since the company was offering a limited amount of units. The limited amount wasn’t 100 or 50 but just three. The two flash sales after that were even lower at two units. This meant that many missed out on buying a Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite.
Several Complaints and Criticism
Several customers visited the company’s official Facebook page to complain about the promotion. One user explained that the phone was sold out right away. Reports say the website was programmed to give users the information that the phone was sold out immediately after the sale started.
The complaints have even caught the attention of the organization in charge of looking out for promotions and deals from companies. They have seen them and are deciding whether they will investigate the controversial flash sales.
Xiaomi Apologizes
Xiaomi has responded to the criticism by apologizing to the customers who missed out on buying the phone. One representative of the company in the UK said that the system picks buyers randomly when there are too many trying to buy devices. Customers say the company never stated that this was a lottery and that they thought it was a first come first serve deal.
