Lindsey Buckingham says his ex-girlfriend and former Fleetwood Mac member Stevie Nicks might still have romantic feelings for him.

“There were a number of years that I wasn’t above her,” Buckingham told the Times in a revealing new interview. “It is possible that she was never completely above me either.”

Buckingham’s statement comes after he said he was fired from Fleetwood Mac in 2018 because Nicks gave the group an ultimatum that one of the two had to leave. The group chose Nicks, and Buckingham, who initially joined the group with Nicks in 1975, was fired.

Nicks disagreed with Buckingham’s statement, instead claiming that she was not responsible for his dismissal from the legendary group.

“I didn’t have him fired, I didn’t ask for him to be fired, I didn’t ask for him to be fired. Frankly I got fired, “Nicks said Rolling stone last month. “It is unfortunate that Lindsey has chosen to tell a revisionist story of what happened in 2018 with Fleetwood Mac. Her version of events is factually inaccurate, and although I have never spoken publicly about the matter, preferring not to not spread dirty laundry, certainly think the time has come to shed some light on the truth. I could publicly reflect on the many reasons why, and maybe someday I will in a memoir, but suffice it to say that we could start in 1968 and work through 2018 with a litany of very specific reasons why I won’t be working with him. “

Buckingham explained the tumultuous history between him and Nicks, saying the former couple never really faced the trauma of their breakup decades ago.

“The way we had to cross Rumors is part of the heritage and heroism of the whole, ”Buckingham told the Times. “We haven’t had time to heal or move forward in the traditional sense. I think – and she was the one who walked away from me at the time – that we both had to compartmentalize our feelings. It’s not a healthy thing to do because these little compartments can stay sealed for years, until things start to creep in when you don’t realize it.

After the couple’s initial separation, Buckingham married and started a family. But he said that Nicks, who had romances with Don Henley and their bandmate Mick Fleetwood after their split, instead focused on his professional life. He suggested it might play a role in his feelings.

“I met the love of my life late in life and it gave me a whole new world view,” he told the British newspaper. “Stevie didn’t have children. She took a different path and made her professional life more important. How has it been in the last three, four, five years … its hard for me to know what her mentality is towards me, but i know what mine is for her because i have been married for 21 years and have three kids and it is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Buckingham’s 21-year-old wife Kristen filed for divorce this year. However, he says she is “getting closer” to a reconciliation.

“What I didn’t know at the time was that a lot of people file a case but never follow through,” Buckingham said. “Since then she’s mellowed so we’re trying to work things out. I try to support her and give her as much time as she needs, and I’m optimistic now.

As for his dismissal from the group in 2018, Buckingham said “some people” were not flexible about his desire to delay the tour.

“I was only asking for three months,” he explained. “Three months! Everyone does this all the time. In this case, that was something some people weren’t willing to be generous with. I mean, come on. Fleetwood Mac is built on it.

However, Buckingham did not rule out another reunion of the original group.

“It would be Stevie to have that revelation herself.” And hey, stranger things have happened, “he said.” It’s Fleetwood Mac. Everything is possible.”
