The Chicago Bears got a steal by netting quarterback Justin Fields with the 11th pick overall. Many had Fields ranked as No.2 prospect – some even the best prospect – in the NFL Draft. So it was a surprise when Fields fell where he did, allowing general manager Ryan Pace to trade and get the Bears franchise quarterback.
It still seemed difficult for the Bears to be able to trade to get Fields. Too many things had to happen. San Francisco had to pick another quarterback at No.3. They did. Needy quarterback teams like Carolina and Denver had to let him down. They did it. Heck, even the Eagles trading with the Cowboys to land wide receiver DeVonta Smith, the Giants’ first pick at No.11, was perfectly timed.
But it all happened and the Bears are reaping the rewards with Fields, who has been impressive throughout training camp and in his preseason debut.
And according to Albert Breer, it looks like some of the teams who left Fields may already be regretting it.
In the aftermath of the weekend, many of the squad I spoke to spoke about how their rivals might regret dropping out of Justin Fields in April. It’s early, sure, but what attracted a few scouts I touched base with was how comfortable Fields looked with Matt Nagy’s offense. And I don’t think that comes as a surprise to the Bears guys, based on what they’ve seen so far.
It’s a welcome relief for a franchise like the Bears, which made the mistake of passing Patrick Mahomes on in 2017. Now there are other teams who may have made a similar mistake.
And the Bears, well, looks like they could finally have their franchise quarterback.
