When the Green Bay Packers open their season at home against the Bears and Vikings, they will be outnumbered. On Tuesday, Packers back Aaron Jones was suspended two games for violation of the substance abuse policy of the League. He will be allowed to come back before the Packers' match 3 against the Redskins, and he is allowed to participate in the pre-season.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network the suspension stems from the arrest of Jones last October he was arrested and admitted to having smoked marijuana. Jones later on the NFL
Jones, a fifth-round pick in 2017, broke out during his rookie season with 448 yards and four touchdowns on 81 carries (5.5 yards) per carry and should play a part important in the Packers' backfield during the coming season. Still, the Packers are at least well equipped to cope with his absence, considering that Jones would probably have operated as a part of a backfield by a committee with Ty Montgomery also taking an important role. Without Jones, Montgomery could handle more staves coming out of the backfield. Jamaal Williams, who totaled 556 rushing yards and four touchdowns last year, could also see an increase in her workload.
This is a difficult break for the Packers, considering how their calendar announces. Without Jones – probably their best runner – the Packers should be able to handle the Bears at home, but they will be tested against a Vikings team that won NFC North a year ago and then came out and improved their situation quarterback signing Kirk Cousins this offseason. It will only be a match of Week 2, but it will be perhaps one of the most important games of the Packers season as they will look to climb to the top of the division.
Obviously, as long as Aaron Rodgers is healthy and plays, the Packers will have a chance to beat the Vikings (and any other team, really). Rodgers has overcame less than stellar support pitches before and there is no reason to think that he will not be able to do exactly that again. Jones is a beautiful piece in the Packers attack, but it is not irreplaceable.
Jones, by the way, became the third player to get a suspension on Tuesday. Earlier, the NFL suspended linebacker Reuben Foster 49ers and Rams Jamon Brown goalkeeper for two games each. The three suspensions were announced separately in the space of one hour
