Bruce Arians revealed only one coaching job could bring him out of retirement.
The former Cardinals coach said only being offered the Browns’ head coach position would make him get back on the sidelines.
“Cleveland is the only job I would consider,” he said while in the CBS booth Sunday, via Cantonrep.com.
Arians previously coached for the Browns as the offensive coordinator (2001–03) under Butch Davis. It was a time when the Browns had a winning record, with the team going to the playoffs in 2002.
Since then, Cleveland has gone through quarterbacks and coaches at an alarming rate. According to Arians, the team needs an experienced coach.
Arians does have experience. He was hired at the end of the 2003 season to work with the Steelers and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2007. He held on to that position until 2011.
He then went to work under Chuck Pagano with the Colts in 2012, where he had his first NFL head coaching stint as interim coach when Pagano was diagnosed with Leukemia early in the season.
He led the Colts to a 9-3 record and earned 2012 AP Coach of the Year honors, making him the first interim head coach to win the award.
When the Browns were looking for a new head coach in 2013, Arians wanted to be their guy. But Cleveland hired Rob Chudzinski instead.
Arians spent 2013-17 with Cardinals, and after the 2017 season he announced his retirement.
As for who he would hire on his Browns staff, Arians named his former mentor.
“My guy would be Chuck Pagano,” Arians said.
