Syracuse, N.Y. –The 2018 Syracuse University football season still has two significant games left on its schedule with Notre Dame and Boston College waiting.
Syracuse has a chance to clinch its first 10-win season since 2001 and a shot at a New Year’s Eve six bowl (like the Peach or Fiesta) if they can manage to win those games.
But forget about that for a minute.
Friday night at the Carrier Dome was a time to reflect, as senior day always is, but this wasn’t just any other senior clbad.
“They’ll be etched in stone forever,” Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said following his team’s 54-23 win over Louisville. “Everybody will always remember the 2018 clbad and the season they went undefeated at home.”
Friday’s game reminded of a senior day in 1998 when Donovan McNabb’s Orangemen crushed Miami 66-13.
It was then that a once-mighty power was humbled and a record-setting quarterback got a richly deserved tribute from the Carrier Dome faithful.
Eric Dungey led the Orange to a convincing win over a once-mighty ACC power himself and got to experience the accolades of a record-setting career one selfie at a time on his senior lap around the Dome after the game.
That’s what Friday was all about, especially with the result of this game against a pathetic excuse for Louisville decided provided Syracuse remembered to show up on time.
Babers kept his senior quarterback in the game well into the fourth quarter not only to set up a scenario of being pulled to get a standing ovation, but also with a little revenge in mind from Louisville’s past two wins over the Orange (total combined score: 118-38).
Now the Orange have to put the attaboys behind them and focus on the No. 3 Irish.
“It’s a game that gives us an opportunity to prove that we belong.” Babers said.” To prove we are better than people think we are. It doesn’t mean we are going to prove it. It just means we have the opportunity. This football team was picked to be dead last, and now we are at where we are at. We’re on the map. Now, we have the opportunity to get a red circle. If we had to play them 10 times. I don’t know if we would beat them 10 times. You only have to play them once.”
