The State of New York allows anyone who is prescribed an opioid as an badgesic to apply for medical marijuana instead. The State Department of Health announced the details of the new policy on July 12. Howard Zucker, public health commissioner, said that medical marijuana has proven to be an effective treatment of pain that does not involve the risk of addiction that is present in opioids. For Zucker, giving people an alternative to opioids is a fundamental step in the fight against the epidemic of opioids themselves. The new policy has already entered into force. Other conditions that allow a person to benefit from medical marijuana in New York are chronic pain, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and post-traumatic stress disorder. As of July 10, more than 62,000 people had enrolled in the state's medical marijuana program.
