An Italian study proposes a new method of diagnosing anemia
The research of the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems of the Council National Research Center of Pozzuoli (Cnr-Isasi) in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Research and Biotechnology Ceinge proposes a new methodology for the identification and characterization of diseased red blood cells, having a morphology similar to that of healthy cells.
The technique, based on the optical parameters of red blood cells, opens up new diagnostic methods for many types of anemia and for hematological disorders in which the shape of red blood cells is impaired. The work has been published in ACS Analytical Chemistry.
"Through an advanced 3D imaging technique, we have demonstrated that we can discriminate diseased red blood cells with morphological characteristics similar to those of the healthy control sample," explains Martina Mugnano.
