MANILA, Philippines – FIBA opened disciplinary hearings against Australia and the Philippines after a vicious fight that involved the Milwaukee Bucks Thon Maker during their Cup qualifier Basketball World Monday.
The fight occurred in the area behind the baseline and the video showed a chair being thrown at a player. Former NBA player, Andray Blatche, who is now playing for the Philippines, seemed to be throwing several shots, while Maker came to a Filipino player with legs flying high as he continued.
A total of 13 players were ejected after the scrum that began in the third quarter of Australia's 89-53 win following a collision in the lane. The game continued with only three players from the Philippines.
Anthony Moore, executive director of Australian basketball, apologized to fans in a statement, adding that "this is not the spirit in which the sport should be played and certainly not in the spirit in which we aim to play basketball. "
FIBA says that a decision will be announced in the coming days.
